Navigating the Site

The purpose of this page is to help you navigate the site.
First, let's understand sections.

Sections proceed sequentially: i.e., 1.1, 1.2, 1.3…up to 1.108, then chapter 2 starts (2.1, 2.2, etc.). There are 3 chapters.

You can navigate sequentially forward or back, or you can leap vertically and go from 1.2 to 2.2 or 3.2 (same section, different chapters). The book is made to resonate both horizontally (i.e., sequentially) and vertically.

* If you are on the bottom layer and go down a layer, you will loop back to the top layer. Likewise, if you are on the top layer and go up a layer, you will loop around to the bottom layer. In other words, vertical layers loop around.

Bow quotes are quotes that open and close each chapter and, for ease of navigation, are identified as X.0 and X.109 respectively (e.g., in chapter 1 they appear as 1.0 and 1.109). Strictly speaking, bow quotes are not sections in the text.

The navigator will appear at the bottom of most pages and is how you get around. This is how it’s structured:

For example, if you're on section 1.2, the navigator works as follows:

It will look like this:

1.1

3.2

2.2

1.3

You can navigate:

  • Forward to 1.3 (then 1.4, 1.5, and so on up to 1.108).
  • Back to 1.1.
  • Down one layer in the corresponding section to 2.2.
  • Up one layer in the corresponding section to 3.2 (because you’re in the first layer, going up loops back around to the last layer).

NOTE: The reader is cautioned not to become too attached to the design layout, which was chosen for ease of use. For example: subsequent layers are not actually ‘deeper’ than the former; chapters are not best thought of as parallel lines.

Finally, you can return to the cover page of the book at any point by clicking “Being and Metaphor” in the site-wide navigation at the top right of each page.

Let’s begin.
